Catherine Ulisky has painted the connections between the European starlings in these photographs to show the entire flock as one faceted geometric shape.

My work presents and explores aspects of our surroundings in ways that are new to me, yet faithful to what exists in nature. Carefully observing natural phenomena reminds me constantly of the limitless complexity and wonder of the world we inhabit. It is an exciting, reciprocal process that continually reinvigorates my own appreciation for what is around me.

Derweze, also known as the door to hell, is a 70 meter wide hole in the middle of the Karakum desert in Turkmenistan. The hole was formed in 1971 when a team of soviet geologists had their drilling rig collapse when they hit a cavern filled with natural gas. In an attempt to avoid poisonous discharge, they decided to burn it off, thinking that the gas would be depleted in only a few days. Derweze is still burning today

Calling All Herbivores: Tell Us Why It’s Unethical to Eat Meat: A Contest

Our Hen House has a great response to NY Times columnist Ariel Kaminer’s plea calling all “carnivores” to write an essay on why it is ethical to eat animals.

While I have many gripes about the article (nay, the whole concept), it is the imagery used in the column that is the most provocative to me. A bevy of silhouettes beneath the article’s title, “Tell us why it’s ethical to eat meat: A Contest”.

Billions of sentient beings winnowed down to silhouettes and a “contest”, a game encouraging players to espouse why it’s okay to eat “meat”…while simultaneously forgetting - despite the silhouettes - that these are thinking, feeling individuals, not slabs of flesh.

In lieu of nameless, impersonal shadow figures, meet some actual cows and sheep.

A Hen’s First Steps Outside

People! This photo montage is going to make you smile, cry and smile some more. I am super serious. If you don’t know the back story, read about it here. This is a hen’s FIRST FORAY OUTSIDE. She has NEVER touched the earth or felt the sun or done anything remotely chicken-like, because she has been in a cage producing egg after egg. Now she is a serious outdoorsy lady. I wanted to put cutesy captions, but really, the images speak for themselves.
